Deciding the route

The first place to start?  Making decisions about where it is you are going to go.  Definitely, you want to go to specific locations at the right time of year, but sometimes, going in one direction around the world trumps "ideal weather." You need to make adjustments for this and be flexible.  Unless of course you can spend an unlimited amount of money on tickets going anywhere.  (Although we'll get to this part of the planning later...)

At first, I had a list of at least 30 places that I HAD to go to.  But then I started to think - what was it that I really wanted out of this trip?  I wanted to really spend time relaxing, immersing myself in specific places, seeing the natural beauty of different parts of the world.  I decided that I really needed to limit the number of places I was going.  Then, I also decided that I wanted to use this time off to go to places that just can't be seen in 2 weeks.

Let's be honest - I won't have a whole lot of time in the future to go on long vacations.  I have a job that will require me to be at work a good portion of the time without being able to take such long breaks off.  But, a 2 week vacation a couple times a year would be possible.  So, I started to divide my list into places that could be done in 2 weeks and places that can't.  France, Cinque Terre, Prague, the Galapagos, Japan, etc. - these are places that can be seen in 2 week blocks.  But, Africa, the Middle East, Nepal, Chile - these are the places that needed more time to just soak up the experience!

So, ultimately, I knew that Africa (the southeast part of Africa) was a must.  Tibet, Nepal - musts.  Everything else would be icing.

If you were going on a 6 month trip, what places would be YOUR more than 2 weeks?

I'll end this blog post with a picture that I have been hearting since I saw it a month ago.  It's from National Geographic and was taken by Kostadin Luchansky.  They have a lot of great photos up as they just had a recent photo contest.  Check it out.  You can get lost looking at photos for hours.
