Cappadocia, Day 2

We then headed back to Cappadocia to see the Northern part of the region which includes the famous fairy chimneys.  The fairy chimneys (hoodoo) are made up from volcanic ash (tuff) and a top layer of volcanic basalt.  Because the basalt on top are more resistant to erosion, the bottom tuff wears away and leave the characteristic  fairy chimney appearance.  Eventually, the tuff erodes such that it cannot support the basalt and the mushroom cap falls off.

The tuff is also what the people in the past dug their cave houses from; it is very easy to carve into.  We also went to see famous cave chapels in the Goreme area.  In general though, the general landscape of the land is just spectacular!

Think it but don't say it!
